The sinking of the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily in mid-August is drawing increasingly mysterious circles. Now it has emerged that the divers who investigated the wreck have called for greater surveillance. It is suspected that explosive secret information is in watertight safes on board.
There are fears that highly confidential information believed to be in the ship’s vaults could be of interest to foreign governments such as Russia and China, US broadcaster CNN reported.
Waterproof safes with sensitive data
According to the broadcaster, citing an official involved in the salvage plans, there are watertight safes on the ship that reportedly contain two encrypted hard drives containing classified information, including access codes and other sensitive data.
British tycoon Mike Lynch, who also died in the shipwreck that killed seven people, was the founder of cybersecurity company Darktrac.
There is already more supervision
Initially, local police feared that thieves would attempt to gain access to the wreckage to steal expensive jewelry and other valuables, but now there are fears that this could also be of interest to foreign governments, including Russia and China. According to CNN, a request for more oversight of the recovery was accepted and implemented.
Billionaire and his family have an accident
The Bayesian sank during a heavy, sudden storm off the port of Porticello near Palermo, the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. It is still unclear when the rescue can take place.
The ship was owned by the Isle of Man-based company Revtom Limited, which in turn is owned by Angela Bacares, the widow of British billionaire Mike Lynch. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah died in the shipwreck along with five other people.
