After art has been repeatedly targeted by activists, some museums are now taking drastic measures: from Friday, for example, jackets or bags will no longer be allowed in Berlin.
After the attack on a painting in the Old National Gallery in Berlin, the State Museums tightened their security measures. For the time being, the exhibition spaces can only be visited “because of the increased risk” after depositing coats and bags in the wardrobe or in the lockers, according to a spokeswoman for the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. “Until now, bags up to A4 size were allowed.”
There have been repeated attacks on artworks in recent weeks, most recently on Sunday afternoon a woman threw an artificial blood fluid at Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s glass painting “Clown” and the wall covering there and pasted it on the wall next to the painting. Unlike other disruptive actions, the police do not assume a climate policy background.
