Scholz calls on Xi to use his influence over Russia to end the war

Both sides consider Moscow’s rhetoric about the use of nuclear weapons “unacceptable”

German Chancellor Olaf Sholz on Friday appealed to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “responsibility” for peace, asking him to use his influence over Russia to end the war in Ukraine that began more than eight years ago. “It is about the principles of the United Nations Charter that we all agree on and affirm these principles as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country. These are also important issues” for Beijing, noted the first Western European leader to visit the Asian country since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

During his visit to the Asian giant, the German leader stressed that both sides find Russian rhetoric about the use of nuclear weapons “unacceptable”. “The international community must collectively oppose the use or threat of the use of nuclear weapons, and advocate the use and suppression of nuclear wars,” Xi said.

Scholz also warned of the consequences a military intervention in Taiwan could have, though he championed the “one China” policy. Still, he chose to let any change happen “peacefully and by mutual agreement.”

Beijing, for its part, asked Berlin for respect and cooperation. In this sense, Xi emphasized the importance of the two “powers of influence” working together with “respect” in “times of change and chaos.” In addition, he urged “cooperation” to improve relations, despite criticism from the West of his affiliation with Moscow.
