The head of the CSU deputy in the German Bundestag calls for tougher sentences for climate activists of the “last generation”. The group caused a traffic jam in Berlin with their climate protest on Monday and braked an emergency vehicle.
“Climate protest should not be a license to commit crimes,” CSU leader Alexander Dobrindt told Bild am Sonntag. Significantly harsher sentences are needed for “climate activists to counter further radicalization in parts of this climate movement and to deter imitators.” by police, fire and rescue services.
The reason was the incident on Monday in Berlin. A special vehicle designed to free an injured cyclist from underneath a truck was stuck in a traffic jam on the city highway. As reported, this would have been caused by “last generation” activists who had glued themselves to the street. The cyclist died in hospital, two men are facing consequences.
Scholz criticizes attacks on art
In addition, the group repeatedly makes a name for itself with attacks on works of art. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) criticized these actions on Saturday at a debate convention in Berlin. “I’m happy to admit that I don’t mind if artworks are painted or pelted with pulp in some way.” Scholz thinks these actions achieve the exact opposite of the activists’ concerns.
Berlin mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) promised to take action. There are currently more than 700 criminal cases pending against climate activists in the German capital. So far, only one has been set. More than 250 criminal orders were received.
No end in sight
Regardless of the discussion, protests continued in other major cities this weekend. 500 people blocked private jets at Schiphol on Saturday. Some also chained themselves to the planes. The groups Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion were involved in this.
In Madrid, two people clung to the frames of two famous paintings by the Spanish master Francisco de Goya in the Prado Museum. On the wall between the paintings they wrote “+1.5 C”.
