Ukrainians bring out their creativity

Kiev harnesses ingenuity to create homemade anti-drone and missile launcher systems the military can use against Russian forces

War brings out the worst in society – the damage, the destruction, the death of innocents… – but also courage and creativity. After a long stint at the front, where fatigue and lack of supplies as well as weapons negatively impact the morale of the ranks, the soldiers show off their Richard Dean Anderson-esque skills as MacGyver, a character who could chew with a stick of gum. make almost any gadget that would get him out of more than one rush. Bearing the weight of more than eight consecutive months of war on their shoulders, the Ukrainians have shown their ingenuity with creations they use as weapons to defend against invaders.

To avoid further damage in the numerous Russian drone offensives that Kiev has suffered in recent days, ingenuity has found its way to create homemade anti-drone systems. How? Mounting a heavy machine gun on a truck. “The brigade commander told me, ‘We need a solution (to the ongoing Iranian kamikaze drone attacks). We have submachine guns, that’s all,’ said Sergey Bondarenko, a territorial defense manager who helped develop this project in the industrial town of Krivói Rog, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, in the south of the country.

While the prototype is nothing revolutionary, the truth is that the Ukrainian military had nothing comparable to this kind of arsenal until now. “We have the competence and the equipment, and we have no shortage of ideas,” said Bondarenko, 39, a former engineer who has been fighting against Russian forces since 2014, when Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula and started the armed conflict against the pro-government forces. Russians in the Donbas region.

Protecting your air is one of the main requests of the government of Volodímir Zelenski. His defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, asked the West for help in this regard last Wednesday. “We have to break up the targets in the air. To attack, for example, cruise missiles or ballistic missiles, our defense systems will use missiles such as the German ‘IRIS-T’ and soon there will also be ‘NASAMS’, or our Soviet systems such as ‘Buk’ Against Iranian drones, we can use cheaper equipment like the ‘Gepard’, ‘Stinger’ and ‘Starstreak’, or other equipment,” he explained.

“We ask our partners to find solutions with different systems, not only medium or long-range, but also short-range,” such as those in countries such as Sweden, Germany and the United States, Reznikov said. Meanwhile, the missiles and drones keep coming. For this reason, and to cope with the ridiculous prices of other air defense systems, they have carried out this successful project. The heavy machine gun, Bondarenko explains, can hit targets six kilometers away, a higher altitude than flying drones.

In Ukraine, “there is a lot of love for what is done by hand,” says this soldier-turned-engineer. “We can make rag dolls or machine guns, embroider, sing beautiful songs and kill hundreds of Russians,” he proudly exclaims.

This is not the only invention during the war. Ievgen made a homemade multiple rocket launcher in his off-road Mercedes. How? The four tubes of this weapon come from the Russian ‘Grad’ destroyed by the Kiev army, while a small beam serves as a turret. “We make things with what we have,” says Ievgen.

“I’m doing whatever it takes to help our people win,” said Vitali Brizgalov, who started building small vehicles with built-in rocket launchers for the armed forces in his small garage and with the help of a dozen workers. Thirty of these are already in use at the front. Another example that creativity can be found in every situation.
