Construction has started, the first huts are standing. Salzburg’s popular Christmas market opens on November 17 – with an ice rink and limited lighting. They want to save all visitors a price shock.
Between 20 and 50 cents. A mug of mulled wine or punch will cost so much more at the Salzburg Christmas market this year than last winter. “We are marginally expensive,” said chairman Wolfgang Haider. The inflation wave does not stop at Salzburg’s largest Advent market. The expectation is still high. For the first time in two years, there are no corona restrictions. “We are prepared for anything,” Haider says with a smile.
Extensive lighting is included
The market around the cathedral opens on November 17. Construction is in full swing. Most of the cabins are already there. The Christmas tree will be delivered on Monday. Craftsmen lay about 14 kilometers of electricity cable and three kilometers of light chains with LED lamps. “We don’t want to be without our lighting. That’s part of it,” says Haider.
But: Lighting time has been drastically reduced this year, saving nearly 7,000 kWh of electricity. It will remain dark in the market area from 10pm – with the exception of the Christmas tree and emergency lighting which is required for safety reasons.
This year the Christmas market is open until January 1. There is another ice rink at Mozartplatz. New: there are additional sanitary facilities at the Residenzplatz.
