Steirischer Cold Case – “Finally holding cowardly killers to account”

Date:

Bang in Knittelfeld: 47 years after the attack on a postman, there are new clues. The victim’s family believes in the breakthrough.

A brutally beaten money courier, a cowardly murderer who has been on the loose for almost half a century, and a city that wants to forget: these are the “ingredients” of one of the most spectacular criminal cases in Styria, still unresolved to this day from today.

But now the investigation into the attack on the Knittelfeld postman Johann Fritz is moving again: A cloth handkerchief could convict the perpetrator or perpetrators (see report below)!

fight for justice
“Hope dies last,” says one who has fought for justice for decades with admirable devotion. “Because I owe it to my father.” Johann Fritz junior was 18 years old when his father met his killer in a gloomy stairwell.

On December 2, 1975, the 57-year-old postman was knocked down in an apartment building in Knittelfelder Schulgasse, robbed and dragged to the basement. He succumbed to his massive head injury moments later in hospital.

Bloody jeans
A high school graduate who had hung bloody jeans to dry outside his parents’ house was the prime suspect. But a lawyer convinced the jury of the native’s innocence. The trial ended in an acquittal.

According to the new DNA traces, he may actually have nothing to do with the crime – but there is still no clear evidence.

Handkerchief gives hope
Johann Fritz assumes that a total of five men were involved in the bloody act; three are still alive. “With the new findings, the pressure is increasing on them. Better you break your silence now, before the prosecutor finds out about you.’ Because they do intensive research again. “I only recently heard from prosecutor Mühlbacher that a handkerchief has been found,” says the son of the victim of “Krone”.

“We were perplexed.” By “we” he also means his 85-year-old mother, who never got over the death of her beloved husband. “Only by believing the killer will be found will they survive. He must finally be held accountable.” Will that work, Herr Fritz? “Yes! The opportunity has never been greater than it is now.”
