Rescue commander says: ‘I have never experienced such a big hail with us’

Date:

The tails of the massive thunderstorm, which caused heavy damage in Salzburg, Upper Austria and Bavaria on Saturday night, also triggered some firefighting operations in parts of Lower Austria. A video from the Waldviertel Vitis shows what “light show” was “offered” in the dark sky. The district rescue commander of St. Pölten, Peter Völkl, experienced the sudden change in weather at his home.

“The storm came very suddenly – a short storm, then the hail started right away,” says Peter Völkl from Ossarn in the municipality of Herzogenburg. Although he has lived there for a long time, he had never seen such large hailstones. The thunderstorm was short and fierce – the massive hailstorm would have lasted up to 15 minutes, but then turned into rain, says the father of two, who is also a Red Cross rescue commander in St. Pölten.

Hailstone hit man on head
Only later did he go outside to photograph the hailstones, some of which had already melted (see photo). In fact, the hail came there so quickly and suddenly that one hailstone even hit a friend on the head. Fortunately, nothing happened to him, says Völkl, who also received reports of some damage. Fortunately, he should have remained harmless himself.

Two trees toppled by storm
The severe storms in the Waldviertel also resulted in a double deployment of the Schwarzenau fire brigade in the Zwettl district. At Modlisch, the emergency services had to clear two streets of uprooted trees.

A video (see above) from the Waldviertel Vitis shows how the thunderstorm arrived there and with what celestial light spectacles it announced it long before.
