The state reports that two vaccines were mixed up during a school vaccination campaign in the Salzburg district of Hallein. Instead of Repevax against polio-diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, Gardasil9 was vaccinated against HPV.
33 children in a second class of primary school have been affected, the parents have already been informed. In addition, an information line to the vaccination doctor has been set up for all those affected. The Gardasil9 vaccine against HPV is generally recommended from the 9th birthday, so in this exceptional case it was administered too early and thus off-label.
“We are now advising parents on how to complete the HPV vaccination. According to experts, there is no evidence that there is an increased health risk in such a case. In any case, the attending physician has contact with the legal guardians,” says medical director Petra Gruber-Juhasz.
“Deplorable individual case”
Gruber-Juhasz spoke of a deplorably isolated case. Due to the standardized processes, a mix-up is normally very unlikely. That this happened probably had to do with the fact that the school planned to simultaneously vaccinate older schoolchildren against HPV on Tuesday.
