Extreme duel in Georgia

Date:

The state is heading for a second round of elections as neither of the two Senate candidates gets more than 50% of the vote

The Senate race for Georgia is in a fist. Democratic and Republican candidates Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker will again test their strength in a runoff election to take place on December 6, as neither secured 50% of the vote (libertarian Chase Oliver received about 2% of the vote.

The race is also open in Nevada and Arizona. In the first, the Republicans are ahead in the count, while in the second, the victory is for the time being the Democrats. If things continue like this, Georgia will have the key to the Senate, as Democrats need a win to reach 50 seats and maintain their slim majority thanks to the good vote of Vice President Kamala Harris. If the Republicans win, they would add 51 seats and the House of Lords would be controlled by the conservatives, much like what will most likely happen in the House of Representatives.

The historic Republican stronghold of Georgia was key to Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. He won by fewer than 12,000 votes and catapulted him to the White House. Trump, for his part, took advantage of the narrow margin to fuel voter fraud theory.

These are the two candidates who could be decisive in the United States for the next two years.

Raphael Warnock made history in the January 2021 election by becoming the first black senator in Georgia’s history. He won the second round of elections after the resignation of his predecessor. Now he is aiming for a six-year term if he wins the second round of the Georgia elections, which will take place on December 6. Born 53 years ago in Savannah, he received 49.4% of the vote in the first round, compared to 48.5% for his rival. The rest went to libertarian candidate Chase Oliver.

Warnock is a brilliant speaker, many years experienced as a pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. He preaches from the same pulpit from which Martin Luther King once spoke. His appointment as a senator from Georgia, a state with a slave history, was seen as a major advance in the rights of the black community.

Warnock’s campaign has spared no expense. It invested $135.8 million, while Walker spent $32.4 million, the Federal Election Commission reported. The Democrats tried to spread the scandals that have sprung up around the trajectory of their Republican rival and the accusations of their previous partners. Although Warnock has also been accused by his ex-wife of sexist violence and of not taking care of the children whose custody they share.

Strictly politically, he highlighted the initiatives promoted in Joe Biden’s two years in the White House and defended some of his initiatives, such as the Inflation Reduction Act or student loans. He also quit his activity as a senator during the year and a half he was in office.

Herschel Walker is a former American football star. Born in Wrightsville in 1962, he played in the NFL for 12 years. His brilliant track record as an athlete is the only thing that has endured the stifling public scrutiny of his life since he decided to run for senator. Because Walker’s, which took 48.5% of the vote in the state, has been by far one of the most controversial campaigns in the country.

Walker bragged about a military career that never existed and lied about his work in six hospitals. But the most explosive thing about his campaign was undoubtedly his stance on abortion. A staunch anti-abortionist, he defends its abolition, even in cases of rape or incest. But in 2009 he paid for an abortion himself for an old friend. Tired of Walker’s lies and “hypocrisy” during the campaign, the woman sent a local newspaper the receipt from the clinic where she had had an abortion, a bank receipt with a photocopy of a check signed by Walker, and a card from her with the message “Restore”. Walker also admitted the existence of three children with three different women.

To counter his scandals, Walker turned to the economic and cultural struggle. Strongly backed by Trump and other heavyweights like Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Walker tried to focus his campaign on economic and citizen security issues. Two key factors in a state that has suffered industrial decline. The former sports star also tried to link Warnock to Biden, who blame Republicans for all the ills.

Historic Republican bastion, though it has agreed to variety in recent years, Georgia has a solid Republican base that overwhelmingly voted for Walker. We’ll have to see if it stays that way in a month.
