Japan was rocked early Monday evening (local time) by a strong earthquake. According to Japan’s weather service, the magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Mie Prefecture on the main island of Honshu, at a depth of about 350 kilometers.
The tremors at 5:09 p.m. local time (9:09 a.m. CET) were also felt in the capital Tokyo and numerous other Japanese cities, especially in the prefectures of Fukushima and Ibaraki further north.
No tsunami warning has been issued. There were also no reports of damage or injuries, reports broadcaster NHK. No irregularities were found at the former nuclear power plant in Fukushima either.
Express trains and subways stopped
In Tokyo, Shinkansen bullet trains and subways were briefly halted, but traffic resumed soon after.
