Alarm Sunday afternoon in the middle of Steyr! A large contingent of police removed five young men from a car in Haratzmüllerstrasse, handcuffed them and took them away.
The management was alerted because witnesses saw people in balaclavas driving through the city in a car and were concerned. The police assumed that a robbery had already been committed or that another was imminent. Half a dozen patrols advanced and stopped the car.
Weapon unusable
After securing the young men, who were actually hooded, police also discovered a Kalashnikov – a Russian assault rifle – in the car. This was not functional, but looked deceptively real. Fortunately, none of the masked boys had any weapons in their hands.
It turned out that all five prisoners were 17 to 21-year-olds with a migration background living in the Linz region and attending a vocational school in Steyr. They stated that they were only joking and that they had no intention of committing a crime. The judiciary must decide whether the “prank” has legal consequences.
