Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov left the G20 summit on Tuesday before its official end. A reason was not given. Lavrov came to the UN Security Council in New York for his own speech just two months ago.
This time the plane with the Russian delegation left the Indonesian island of Bali on Tuesday evening (local time). The meeting of the 20 leading economies and emerging countries will take place there, which ends this Wednesday. Lavrov had represented Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had not come to Bali due to time constraints.
Joint statement on the war in Ukraine
The Minister of Foreign Affairs held numerous talks and attended meetings on Tuesday. Negotiations in Bali included a declaration on the war in Ukraine. Most members strongly condemn the war in Ukraine. Russia is urged to cease hostilities and withdraw its troops from Ukraine immediately. Moscow’s position is also addressed, stating “There were different views and different assessments of the situation.” However, Russia agreed that both the use of nuclear weapons and the threat to use them are impermissible.
Nuclear weapons illegal
Lately, there have been repeated concerns about Russia’s use of nuclear weapons. Lavrov confirmed that work on the document was practically complete. However, Western colleagues “tried in every possible way to politicize this statement and try to sneak in language that would condemn the actions of the Russian Federation on behalf of the entire G20, including ourselves,” he told Russia’s state news agency TASS.
According to state television, the minister’s departure from the top was already scheduled for Tuesday evening. A reason was not given. Only a day earlier, Lavrov rejected a report that he had been taken to an Indonesian hospital with heart problems.
