In the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, an extremely strange incident occurred: a venomous cobra bit an eight-year-old boy – and he bit back twice in retaliation. The snake died of its wounds, the child survived.
Eight-year-old Deepak was playing in the garden when a cobra suddenly wrapped itself around his arm and sank its teeth into it. “I was in a lot of pain. When the snake didn’t move when I tried to shake it off, I bit hard twice. It all happened very quickly,” Deepak told local media.
“dry bite”
The cobra then died. The parents immediately took their child to an infirmary, where the antidote was administered and he was observed for a day. Deepak was soon discharged in good health: according to the doctors who examined him, he had suffered a so-called dry bite. The cobra hadn’t injected any venom when it bit its hand.
The child is from the remote village of Pandarpadh in Jashpur district. This district in Chhattisgarh state is particularly rich in snakes, with more than 200 species living in the area. In India, a particularly large number of people die from snake bites: in the Southeast Asian country, an average of 58,000 deaths per year. In comparison, according to the WHO, up to 138,000 people worldwide die from snake bites each year.
