Before the American Thanksgiving holiday, President Joe Biden pardoned two turkeys and saved them from the oven. Chocolate and Chip will live on the campus of North Carolina State University.
Biden expressed her pardon on Monday during the traditional ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. The animals would be eaten on Thanksgiving next Thursday. The ceremony did not go as planned either. Biden’s German Shepherd, Commander, began barking on the balcony of the White House, frightening the two turkeys. “I was afraid that if he comes down, he will not only kiss and lick you, but also go after the turkeys,” the US president told his audience. That’s why he left the dog upstairs.
Snipe at Republicans
The president, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, also used his speech to silence opposition Republicans. “The only red wave this season comes when a German Shepherd, Commander, knocks over the cranberry sauce on our table,” Biden said. He alluded to the color of the party, which performed worse than expected in the November 8 midterm congressional elections. For example, they failed to win a majority in the Senate.
Thanksgiving is the American version of the harvest festival and for many people the most important family celebration in the US. Biden plans to spend the holidays with his family on the resort island of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
