With the start of the international campaign “16 days against violence against women”, the receipt initiative of domestic retailers will start again on Friday throughout Austria: the numbers of various helplines and the police emergency number will be used until December. A summit on violence protection will also take place on 6 December.
Specifically, the following numbers can be found on the receipts:
- the police emergency number 133
- the number of the women’s line against violence 0800-222-555
- the number of the Reporting Center for Violence 0800-700-217
- the victim line of the Austrian judiciary 0800-112-112
“I want everyone affected by violence in Austria to know that they are not alone in this difficult situation. Therefore, I thank the Austrian trade association for this important cooperation.” Attorney General Alma Zadic (Greens). “A QR code and the most important hotlines are printed on millions of receipts in thousands of stores,” explains Rainer Will, director of the German trade association.
Facilitate access to help
“Especially at Christmas time, we want to use the 1.9 million daily contacts with our customers at the cash registers across Austria to make it easier for affected girls and women to access offers of help,” says Christoph Matschke, CEO of REWE International AG . “There is no behavior by women that legitimizes any form of violence against women and every woman needs to know that help is available and that she is not alone,” said Women’s Affairs Minister Susanne Raab.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, 25 years of protection against violence have been characterized by continuous development: hardly any other law has been expanded and adapted so often to the realities of life. In the violence protection package, 18 million euros would be made available annually by, among others, the Department of the Interior for violence protection, for violence prevention advisory centres, and violence protection centres.
Ministry notes increased willingness to report
An increase in the number of entry and approach bans is mainly interpreted as a high willingness to report and high confidence in the police. In 2020 there were 11,652 entry and approach bans, in 2021 there were 13,690, this year at the end of October 12,100. In 2022 alone, about 10,000 so-called offenders have been sent for violence prevention advice, which is now mandatory. “In the past two years alone, the Interior Ministry has more than doubled its number of prevention officers to 1,100,” added Interior Secretary Gerhard Karner.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, numerous experts have been invited to the summit on violence protection on December 6 with Minister of Women Raab, Minister of Justice Zadić, Minister of the Interior Karner and Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens), including the well-known psychiatrist Adelaide Kastner.
