Taken from apartment – Iran: Journalist arrested at birthday party

Date:

Precisely on her birthday, a critical journalist was arrested in Iran. Journalist Mariam Wahidian was taken from her apartment on Sunday, various Iranian media reported unanimously on Monday. She worked for the reformist newspaper Shargh, among others.

Observers believe it is linked to the protests against the political leadership in the country that have been going on for more than two months. More than 60 media workers have already been arrested as part of the nationwide demonstrations, according to New York’s Committee to Protect Journalists.

Reporting capabilities are extremely limited in the country. Disruptions and blockages of the internet occur again and again. Iran is one of the last places on Reporters Without Borders’ press freedom ranking.

Estimate: Hundreds of protesters killed
The mass protests were provoked by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September. She died in police custody after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes. Human rights activists estimate that at least 450 protesters were killed and about 18,000 demonstrators arrested.

Women journalists locked up in notorious prison
Some journalists are being held in the notorious Ewin Prison in the capital Tehran. The journalist Nilufar Hamedi of the reform newspaper “Shargh”, who was one of the first to publish the Amini case, and her colleague Elaheh Mohammadi are also imprisoned there. The Secret Service recently described the women as foreign agents. The newspaper denied the allegations.
