Former Chinese head of state and party leader Jiang Zemin has died Jiang died in Shanghai on Wednesday at the age of 96, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
The stated causes of death were “leukemia and multiple organ failure”. Jiang Zemin came to power after crushing student protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He relied on political repression and economic opening.
Jiang Zemin’s predecessor was the legendary head of state and party Deng Xiaoping, who ushered in China’s economic boom with capitalist reforms in the 1980s.
Jiang Zemin continued this policy as leader of the Communist Party and from 1993 as president. China also joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 under his reign. In 2002 and 2003 respectively, he handed over the leadership of the party and state to Hu Jintao, the predecessor of current President Xi Jinping.
