In the case of abuse involving a physical education teacher who, until his suicide in May 2019, may have abused several boys aged nine to 14 at a Vienna high school, there are new allegations. These are also directed against the former and current principal of the school in question and were brought to the attention of the public prosecutor in a further explanation of the facts by the lawyer of the victims Herta Bauer, who represents some former students.
A first account of facts that Bauer brought in at the end of September against two possible accomplices of the educator on suspicion of sexual abuse of minors and abuse of authority, was not adopted by the Public Prosecution Service. After a short interrogation, the public prosecutor came to the conclusion that the current suspicion was not sufficient for a criminal investigation. The two old acquaintances of the physical education teacher – a former student of the educator and a former teacher at another school and basketball coach – were “smuggled” into a sports club and allegedly behaved in an abusive manner towards children and young people there , had the suspicion in the reported.
“Extremely Aggressive Behavior”
In the meantime, other witnesses have contacted the representatives of the victims and made statements that primarily relate to the school environment and are directed against the school management. The sports teacher, who would have been abusive for years, was reported in the spring of 2019 by a former student. After the teacher’s home was searched, the director, aware of the ongoing investigations, would not immediately have him removed from service. The teacher was therefore able to continue teaching until May 24, 2019, with the last days before his suicide marked by “particularly aggressive behavior towards his underage students”, according to witnesses, as stated in the ad. In this context, there is physical toil in the heat of physical education and verbal failures, and the teacher is said to have pulled a student by the ear.
Evidence tucked away?
Recent information from former students also confirms the suspicion that after the suicide of the school physical education teacher, evidence may have been hidden away that was not considered by the police when the teacher’s residence was searched. The search was limited to the teacher’s apartment. He had his own laptop, his own camera and data and storage media in the school. The good acquaintance and ex-student of the teacher is said to have come to school several times after his death and emptied the teacher’s locker and the so-called chill-out zone, where abuse probably took place. The acquaintance was there “all week” and “has the stuff with him,” the statement said. The director would only then have sent him out the door.
People smuggled in from outside the school?
Even people from outside the school would have been involved in the physical education teacher’s lessons – apparently for emergency services at apparatus gymnastics – and “hit” the students. A former student reports an “old man with gray hair” who was “very unpleasant” and “always touching us everywhere”.
Awaiting report from U-Commission
The Vienna Education Board, which had asked the public prosecutor to present its own statement of the facts, had set up its own commission of inquiry to clarify what was happening at or around the school. Their report is now overdue. It was initially announced for mid-November and later for late November.
