For 160,000 € a year – should fight rodents: New York is looking for “rattsaar”

Date:

The American metropolis of New York is currently looking for a “rodent control director”, but this quickly became the more resonant title “Rat Czar”. He should be well rewarded for his bloody work.

They are cunning, voracious and prolific. “New York City’s rats are legendary for their survival skills, but they don’t run the city — we do,” the job posting reads from Mayor Eric Adams. We are looking for a “slightly bloodthirsty” New Yorker with excellent communication skills, who hates rats and has a “general aura of badass”.

While the official job title is “Director of Rodent Containment,” it quickly became the slightly more resonant title of “Rat Czar.” The activity is also well paid: for the chosen one there is an annual salary of the equivalent of 114,000 to 160,000 euros.

For generations, the New York City government has tried to control the rodents – with mixed results: Whether in parks, on sidewalks or other places – more and more specimens have been sighted recently. The lockdowns during the corona pandemic also helped, allowing the rats to lead a somewhat undisturbed life on the street.

The pesky rodents survived a multimillion-dollar initiative by former mayor Bill de Blasio. At the time, the focus was on improved home inspections and more waste collection services. In addition, the rats were literally made cold: workers shoveled dry ice into the shelters of the animals to suffocate them.

And while still a Brooklyn borough president, Adams devised a poisonous soup trap to drown rats attracted by the smell of food.
