In the evening, the 81-year-old’s phone rang. There were burglars in the Jakomini neighborhood, she had to quickly get her belongings from the bank and put them in safety, a voice said. A colleague would come and help her.
Called the emergency number “133” with a second mobile phone
The elderly woman knew about this scam from many media reports. She quickly grabbed her second cell phone and called the “real” police. The officials immediately left – and the trap snapped shut! The “loot collector”, a Turk (24) living in Germany, was caught and arrested right outside the front door. Another suspect (26), who was keeping an eye on the Turk, looked surprised when the police, working closely with the prosecutor’s office, took him out of a taxi and into custody. During the subsequent search of a specially rented apartment, the police finally hit the mark: gold coins and jewelery were seized in an extractor hood.

Calling two other women did not end well: “Police Schmiedgasse, your friend has had an accident and has to pay, otherwise she will go to jail” a scammer contacted a woman from Graz (77). Then even a “senior prosecutor” called her. The perpetrators made off with about 40,000 euros. An alleged “gold coin inspector” also stole valuables worth €20,000 from an 88-year-old.
