American astronauts Josh Cassada and Frank Rubio completed the installation of solar panels on the International Space Station (ISS) during a field mission. The duo spent about seven hours outside the ISS on Saturday, the US space agency NASA said.
The next excursion to the US is scheduled for December 19. The collectors should significantly improve the energy supply of the ISS. The solar sails, known as iROSA (International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array), are intended to increase the space station’s available total capacity from 160 to a maximum of 215 kilowatt-hours, NASA reports on its website.
It was the 256th spacewalk for the assembly, upgrade and maintenance of the space station and the second for the two American astronauts. Cassada and Rubio are on their six-month mission, working and living aboard the microgravity laboratory at the outpost of humanity.
