The riding school bought back the scandalous stallion for about 12,000 euros

Date:

The Spanish Riding School bought back a stallion sold in 2013 to the daughter of its chairman for the same price. For “Maestoso Fantasca-67” 12,000 euros was paid. The background to the purchase contract dated 30 November 2022 is an expert report. The current purchase price “moves in the lower echelon of the range” of the report, the Manege said in a broadcast.

The Finanzprokuratur – the body representing the Republic of Austria in civil claims – commissioned the report. In the spring of 2022, the Finanzprokuratur of the Spanish Riding School and the owner, the Republic of Austria, were jointly instructed to legally participate in an all-round appropriate settlement of civil claims.

Retired at a young age
The stallion, born in 2008 – like many other breeding horses at Piber Stud – was rejected at a young age during the selection of the young stallions because it was expected that he would neither meet the requirements as a future breeding stallion nor for future use in the ideas of the Spanish Riding School informed the riding school. In 2013, the Spanish Riding School sold “Maestoso Fantasca-67” to the daughter of its chairman of the Supervisory Board, who was then trained at the expense of the Riding School. The stallion was now suitable for use in the Spanish Riding School, he has been used in 182 versions so far.

The former first head rider Klaus Krzisch had filed a complaint against the former management of the Spanish Riding School. The daughter of the head of the supervisory board was the “only woman in the world” who was allowed to ride a Lipizzaner who took part in demonstrations. This is only allowed for riders, he explained in January. The infidelity investigations of the Public Prosecution Service, which have now been completed, are directed against Johann Marihart, Elisabeth Gürtler and Erwin Klissenbauer. A corresponding project report was already available in November. This is still being investigated by the senior prosecutor and the Ministry of Justice. It is therefore still unclear whether a report will be filed.

Sale price in the lower range
The research platform “Dossier” reported in November that the sales price of 12,000 euros in 2013 would have been well below the value. According to internal documents from the Manege, the stallion would be worth 170,000 euros today. For the stallion, it is “not really easy to determine the market value, because there is no market for Lipizzaner stallions,” the chief financial prosecutor, Wolfgang Peschorn, said in an interview with the APA. In any case, the 12,000 euros falls in the lower regions of the expert opinion. From an economic point of view, the buyback of 12,000 euros was a good thing for the Spanish Riding School. “There is no damage to that,” Peschorn confirmed.

The current general manager of the traditional institution, Alfred Hudler, also thinks the buyback of the family of the former chairman of the supervisory board Johann Marihart is “a sensible solution”, he told “Dossier”. With that, “the matter is settled.”
