In an unexpected speech to the nation hours before debate on a vacancy motion in parliament, Castillo announced the dissolution of the House and the establishment of an emergency government.
“Following the civil claim across the country, we have taken the decision to establish an emergency government aimed at establishing the rule of law and democracy, for which the following measures are issued: temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and establish of an exceptional emergency government,” he announced.
Police rejected the “breaking of constitutional order” and have urged the public to “respect the political constitution and remain calm”, as well as “have faith in the institutions of the state”.
