Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who returned home after a prisoner exchange between Moscow and Washington, has expressed his support for the Russian offensive war in Ukraine.
“If I had the opportunity and the necessary skills, I would go (to the front) as a volunteer,” the 55-year-old said in a stream on Russia’s state broadcaster RT (formerly Russia Today). He never understood why Russia didn’t start the war sooner, he said.
Bolt traded for Griner
Bout was traded for American basketball player Brittney Griner on Thursday, despite tense relations between Moscow and Washington over the war in Ukraine. While Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia for a drug offense a few months ago, Bout has already served 14 years.
The Russian, known as the “Dealer of Death”, was sentenced in the United States to a total of 25 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and arms trafficking. Moscow has repeatedly tried to free Bout, who is said to have ties to the Russian secret service.
