Meters high lava fountain – Fuego volcano in Guatemala erupted again

Date:

In Guatemala, the dangerous Fuego volcano has erupted again. Authorities reported continuous explosions on Saturday, a lava fountain up to 500 meters high and a column of ash rising more than a kilometer into the air. However, the neighboring communities were not initially evacuated.

The 3763 meter high Volcán de Fuego (volcano of fire) is located about 35 kilometers southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Central America. Hundreds of people died in a devastating outbreak in June 2018 – 215 bodies were found, about as many people are still missing today.

Two other volcanoes in Guatemala are active
Two other volcanoes are currently active in the Central American country: Santiaguito, about 100 kilometers west of Guatemala City, and Pacaya, 20 kilometers south of the capital.

Outbreak also in Chile
Chile’s Lascar volcano also registered increasing activity on Saturday. According to the Geological Survey, the volcano, which is about 1,100 kilometers north of Santiago in the Andes, produced minor earthquakes in the afternoon and spewed out a 6,000-meter cloud of gas and ash.

Yellow alarm declared
Authorities raised the warning level to “yellow” and established a five-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater. They also issued an ash cloud warning for air traffic. Lascar, about 70 kilometers from a popular tourist center, last erupted in 1993. Further south, yellow alert levels continued to apply to the Nevados de Chillán volcanic group and Villarrica volcano.
