Former Peruvian president refuses to undergo drug tests and denounces “camouflaged” doctors trying to obtain samples

Three days after he was arrested for ordering a closing of Congress and attempting to create an emergency government, former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo broke his silence. He did this through a letter published on Saturday evening – early Saturday morning in Spain – by Congressman Guillermo Bermejo after visiting him in the prison of the police Special Operations Directorate. In the letter, far from showing remorse for his coup attempt, the deposed president said he was the victim of a “Machiavellian scheme” led by the prosecution, the legislature and the current head of state, Dina Boluarte.

“Yesterday afternoon – on Friday – a group of camouflaged doctors and a faceless prosecutor forced me to take a sample without my consent. Similarly, today they came back with the same thing because they had refused me, for safety and my integrity. », castillo denounced in the letter. The accusation was denied by the president of the Institute of Legal Medicine, Francisco Brizuela, who explained that the doctors identified and accompanied by a representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office went to jail, but that the former president ” refused to pass on the psychological and psychiatric expertise. Nor did he authorize “that a sample of blood and urine be taken” with which to examine psychotropic substances.

The tests to detect possible drugs were ordered by the Attorney General’s Office after Castillo’s entourage stated that in the hours leading up to the speech ordering the dissolution of Congress, the former president did not appear to be in good health and that he had even could have taken something. .

As the Peruvian Congress prepared to hold an extraordinary plenary session this Sunday night to learn more about the proceedings presented by the prosecution against Castillo and two former ministers, the leftist leader’s followers took to the streets to monitor the situation. Thousands of people rallied in Cajamarca, Arequipa, Tacna, Huancayo, Cusco, Puno and Andahuaylas, according to images from local television. In the latter city, the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac) announced this Sunday the closure of the airport due to disturbances and fires at part of its facilities by demonstrators protesting against Boluarte and demanding an electoral push.

Supporters of the deposed president also threatened to paralyze the copper mines of Las Bambas and Antapacca, while unions and social organizations in Arequipa, the country’s second most populous city, have announced protests will continue. On Saturday night, 20 people, including four police officers, were injured in Andahuaylas alone, while journalists and cameramen reported attacks in Lima. At the same time, the teaching staff and the Federation of Workers of Cuzco have announced that they will participate in a 24-hour national strike called for on Thursday.
