What will happen to the 146-room house on Kärntnerstrasse in Linz? If asylum seekers move in, will it remain an apartment building, will it be used for apartments or city offices in the future? The mayor of Linz would like to have a say in the answer to the question.
Lately everyone has been talking about the Ibis Hotel at the Kennistoren in the station area. After the owner, BIP Immobilien Development GmbH, offered Bettenburg – as reported – to the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU) as a possible asylum accommodation. Before that – in February of this year – the Viennese real estate developers had other plans. The aim was to convince the urban development advisory board to add two floors to the four-storey hotel and convert the 146 hotel rooms into 104 residential units.
‘The location contradicts an asylum district’
But because the project was only moderately popular, another attempt was made in July, which was ultimately successful. The planned residential use was again off the table and there was talk of a more spacious and open hotel. However, instead of initiating the conversion, the offer came to the BBU in November – much to the dismay of SP city boss Klaus Luger, who said in the “Krone” about the cause: “The location in the immediate vicinity of the train station , to the Volksgarten and to urban areas with a high migrant density speaks against it.”
Luger expressed interest in buying by letter
According to the mayor, however, there are many more possible applications that he can imagine. Therefore, he would have already expressed the municipal interest in buying in Vienna. Luger told the “Krone” on Tuesday: “Yes, that’s right, we would like to buy the property including the property and have already expressed our interest in buying in writing.”
