With yacht in the Atlantic Ocean – shipwrecked shipwrecked shipwrecked from Upper Austria rescued after two weeks

Date:

For two weeks, an Upper Austrian drifted back and forth across the Atlantic on a damaged yacht. Ironically, a Viennese was now involved in his rescue.

The expedition cruise ship “World Voyager” of the German shipping company Nicko Cruises with 118 passengers and 108 crew members is currently sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. One of the crew members is Wolfgang Pröhl, an adventurous traveler and operator of the delightful miniature Tirolerland near the Naschmarkt (open again from 24 December). On board the “World Voyager”, the Viennese acts as a specialized editor and has the rank of officer.

After receiving a distress call through a facility in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the cruise ship captain changed route and spotted the wrecked yacht. The headsail lay in the water and was used as a kind of shed.

“I ate nothing for ten days and lost 30 kilos”
The four men on board were in a sorry state. According to his own statements, Helmut W. from Enns had not eaten for ten days and had lost 30 kilos. His three companions from Morocco were slightly better positioned. They probably repeatedly looted the strictly rationed food supplies. In any case, the four castaways were then brought to safety with a rubber dinghy.

“Here on board, first aid was provided by our doctor and the nurse in the modern ship’s hospital,” Pröhl describes in a telephone conversation with “Krone”. After the first night, 65-year-old Helmut W. was finally able to breathe again and said: “Now I feel much better. I feel stable.” The quartet had to give up the dilapidated yacht for a client Mission failed.
