Two squirrels caused chaos on a train from Reading to Gatwick Airport (London). They attacked passengers, people fled to other compartments and connecting doors had to be locked. Finally, the fare dodgers were ‘swept’ out of the train with brooms and nuts.
“It was complete chaos,” an eyewitness told the Sun newspaper. “The squirrels were getting in the back of the car and attacking people.”
Many passengers then fled into other cars. “The conductor had to lock the doors to prevent the squirrels from climbing all over the train.” The unwanted passengers had boarded at the village of Gomshall – “without a ticket”, as the Great Western Railway (GWR) pointed out. At the Redhill stop, the train crew tried in vain for over half an hour to expel the agile rodents using brooms and nuts. Eventually, GWR decided to cancel the journey and send the train back to Reading. Particularly annoying: for some passengers, the two squirrels may have cost them their flight.
Animals have repeatedly caused problems on Britain’s railways: Last year, swans disrupted train services in London for several days in a row.
