Requested improvements – chicken fattening scandal: operation remains closed

Date:

After the unsavory recordings of a Styrian poultry farm, Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA) carried out inspections at the farmer on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was determined that the videos came from the company and were likely taken over the summer, according to an AMA broadcast on Thursday. At the moment there are only chicks in the barn “that make a healthy and vital impression. No increased mortality rate could be determined.”

Nevertheless, the operation remains blocked from the AMA for now. One of the reasons for this is, among other things, the “improvement potential” in the prescribed two check-ups per day. “Because of the administration and the personal situation at the company” improvements are necessary. The same goes for the resting phases — especially at the end of fattening, the AMA statement said. It was not possible to check how the animals were caught, as there are only chicks in the affected house.

Operation remains blocked
“The pet owner was asked to make a comprehensive statement about all allegations. Subsequently, the final audit report and statement, as well as all other available information, will be reviewed by AMA Marketing as licensor and a decision will be made on sanctions. We would like to keep you informed of developments. In any case, the company will remain closed until the situation is finally clarified and may no longer comply with the AMA quality mark program.

AMA promises immediate action
In addition, the AMA wanted to respond immediately “with focus actions and spot audits, also at unusual times. The fine-grained and risk-based controls of different agencies need to be better networked so that data from veterinarians, slaughterhouses, food controls and other controls can provide a better picture,” said Managing Director Michael Blass. He stimulated a broad discussion on social claims, agriculture, livestock, animal welfare, controls, breeds and costs.

The Verein gegen Tierfabriken (VGT), which released the video earlier this week, underlined its demands for species-appropriate livestock farming with a protest outside a supermarket branch in Vienna on Thursday. The activists criticized “the use of torture breeding”. They are asking the Lidl retail chain across Europe to “join the European broiler initiative”.
