“Fearful Minutes” – Brave helper saved Liam (3) from suffocation

Date:

In the early summer of this year, a candy put little Liam (3) from Satteins (Vorarlberg) in great danger. Thanks to the efforts of Marcel Hois, worse things could be prevented.

“These were anxious minutes and it could have ended differently,” Mama Nadine Lampert describes the incident in the village center. Her three-year-old son Liam received a candy.

They had moved on when he suddenly gasped desperately. “The candy was no longer in his mouth. He had swallowed it.” Fortunately, a cyclist heard the mother screaming for help in panic. “He came immediately and helped us,” said Nadine visibly grateful.

A saving grace
When Marcel Hois from Schlins arrived at the scene of the accident, he first tried to clear his airways by patting him on the back. That did not work. In the emergency situation, he remembered the Heimlich maneuver he had once learned in a first aid course. “I’ve never had to use it before, but after a few tries it spit the candy out.”

Emergency services were still called to make sure little Liam was okay. “I was so relieved when he caught his breath,” reports Marcel. Mother Nadine is grateful that the 33-year-old was there right away: “He could have continued. But we are happy that there are people who help in times of need.”

Marcel is honored for his commitment
It was Marcel’s first time as a rescuer, but he would do it again and again. “It hits me when I see Liam doing so well again!” Marcel Hois is honored for his commitment to an ORF television show along with other rescuers. “The biggest mistake is to look the other way and do nothing!”
