At 65.24 centimeters, 20-year-old Iranian Afshin Esmaeil Ghaderzadeh is the shortest person in the world. This makes him almost seven centimeters shorter than the previous record holder, 36-year-old Edward “Niño” Hernandez (Colombia). Born in 2002 in Bukan, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran, he weighed just 700 grams at birth. He now weighs just over six kilograms.
In Dubai, where Afshin was measured for the world record three times, he went to a tailor and a hairdresser before ticking off one item on his bucket list: a visit to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.
Afshin describes his life so far as not exactly easy. Due to his small size, he could not go to school alone and only learned to read and write insufficiently. Recently, however, he was able to write his name, and he was proud of it. “My son’s constant treatment and physical weakness are the main reasons why he dropped out of college, otherwise he doesn’t have mental problems,” says Esmaeil Ghaderzadeh, Afshin’s father.
Smartphone often too heavy
For example, Afshin speaks both Kurdish and Persian and uses the Farsi dialect. He always has his smartphone with him, he reports to Guinness World Records. It’s hard to bear, but somehow he manages. He spends his free time watching football and dancing. He spends most of his money on tailored suits. While he could wear clothes for small children, their naturally playful design doesn’t appeal to him. His biggest wish is to drive a car one day.
Record is “like a dream”
Speaking of carrying: Afshin can walk well, but likes to be carried over longer distances. Since he cannot follow in his father’s professional footsteps and there are no other jobs in his village that he could do, the family often struggles with the high cost of his medical treatment. But now he hopes to be able to give something back to his parents with his newfound fame. The record is like “a dream” to him, he feels “special”. Thanks to this prize it might be possible to support mom and dad financially.
