The police are investigating an animal case in the Tyrolean Unterland: After his dog suffered a completely healable injury, a local resident would rather have skipped the planned operation and simply shot the four-legged friend.
How did the four-legged friend, who was only a year and a half old, die? Did his owner actually have the heart to shoot his mixed breed (Border Collie/Australian Shepherd)? One thing is certain, the dog was recently hit by a car and the owner was referred by a vet to a better equipped vet.
“It was a broken foot. A routine operation. After two or three months the animal would have walked normally again,” says the veterinary practice involved. Then, according to the description, the dog owner suddenly called to cancel the appointment for the operation. The man held back from further explanation.
Warning to other vets
There was already a suspicion of evil – which went so far that there was a telephone warning within the veterinarians: a dog owner might show up with the unjustified wish to put his four-legged friend to sleep. However, this did not happen. Instead, it was suspected that the man had simply shot the mongrel dog.
The owner of the dog is being questioned
Police are now investigating a similar report. “Initial information is actually in the direction of an execution, but that has been revised afterwards,” a police officer said when asked by “Krone”. The dog owner’s questioning is still pending, police said. The police stressed that they want to investigate such incidents closely.
The pet welfare law is clear: killing a dog – including your own – for no reason is a criminal offence.
