After attacks – Zelenskyj pushes for an anti-aircraft system from the west

Date:

A day after the last Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, all residents of the capital Kiev have been reconnected to the water supply, according to the authorities. The metro is also running again, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Saturday. Meanwhile, head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy increased his demand for the supply of air defense systems.

The West must “increase pressure on Russia,” the head of state said in his daily video address on Saturday evening. His country urgently needs anti-aircraft missiles. There was also a national air raid alarm on Saturday. The military administration in Kiev called on the population to go to shelters via the short message service Telegram. According to the authorities, a man has died in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. The 36-year-old died in his car when Russian troops attacked the western part of the city with artillery and rockets, regional governor Yaroslav Yanukovych told the Telegram short message service. A 70-year-old woman was also injured.

Only on Friday, the Russian army launched another massive attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, paralyzing electricity and water supplies in a large area. Russia fired more than 70 missiles. It was one of the heaviest waves of attacks since the invasion began on February 24.

There were also deaths on Russian territory on Saturday. According to Russian sources, three people have been killed by Ukrainian shelling in a Russian-occupied village in eastern Ukraine. Russian authorities said US-type Himar missiles had landed in Shchastia in the Luhansk region. Five other people were injured and four houses were destroyed.

Does the Patriot Defense System come with it?
Kiev desperately wants the West to equip its army with an advanced Patriot air defense system. NATO hesitated for a long time about this wish. According to media reports, the United States now wants to supply one of these missile systems to Ukrainian forces. An official confirmation of this is still awaited. However, the delivery is particularly difficult, because American instructors, or military personnel, would have to be deployed on site to operate the system. In addition, military experts are skeptical that the Patriot system could actually be decisive for the war, especially since only a few batteries would be shipped. Although they have a large range, they can only cover small areas in terms of area, a former senior military representative who is familiar with the defense system and wished to remain anonymous, told German broadcaster ZDF on Friday.

Protective shield over Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant
A slightly different kind of protective shield is currently being put up by the Russian government at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant over a nuclear waste storage facility. Video footage shows how workers place a kind of transparent tarpaulin over dozens of concrete cylinders at a height of about five meters. “First of all, it protects against fragments and improvised explosive devices dropped by drones,” said a Russian official. Later the screen gets bigger. Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of shooting at the nuclear power plant.
