The magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Northern California killed two people on Tuesday, authorities have since announced. At least eleven people were also injured. Residents were warned of aftershocks.
Two people died as a result of a “medical emergency” during or immediately after the quake, the Humboldt County Civil Protection Agency said Tuesday afternoon (local time).
Hours after the earthquake, more than 70,000 residents in the affected region were without power. According to the authorities, there was extensive damage to roads, homes and supply networks. The population was warned of aftershocks.
Tremors surprised people in their sleep
The quake’s epicenter was near the town of Ferndale, about 250 miles north of San Francisco, according to the USGS. It happened early in the morning (around 2:34 a.m.) local time when many people were still asleep.
