The association “Austrian Friends of Yad Vashem” is history after 21 years. On Wednesday evening, the members decided during a general meeting in Linz to dissolve the association, which has faced criticism due to the controversial appointment of politicians as board members. By the way, it depended on just one vote!
No candidates, no elections: The “Austrian Friends of Yad Vashem” association – which supports the Nazi Holocaust commemoration – had to cancel the board election scheduled for Wednesday at short notice because individual candidates on the candidate list were concerned about the compatibility of work and volunteer work.
The list of politicians around the Welsh FPÖ mayor Andreas Rabl, who said they wanted to ensure the survival of the association, had already withdrawn their candidacy after criticism. And the idea of finding a transitional arrangement was also unenforceable: the board had already resigned.
Successor organization is being considered
That is why the dissolution would be voted on at the general meeting in Linz on Wednesday. “Two-thirds should vote for it,” said spokesman Georg Schuster, and ultimately a single vote – out of 103 valid votes – decided the dissolution after 21 years. A successor organization that is less rigid is being considered – because the now dissolved association, which started with ten members and grew to 870, required a two-thirds majority for almost every decision.
