For many Austrians, Christmas means good food, a Christmas tree and presents. Although many people did not like buying the gifts, according to a recent survey, they want to make them happy and show that they like them.
This year, the Austrian Christmas trees mainly contain:
- Vouchers (42.1 percent),
- followed by children’s goods and toys (24.8 percent),
- Books and e-books (19.1 percent).
In addition, good food and a Christmas tree are part of Christmas for many people. 2.8 million pines and spruces shine brightly in this country, with 70 percent of people relying on a natural tree. Most of the Christmas trees sold come from Austria (especially Lower Austria) and the acreage has almost quadrupled in the last 30 years.
Raclette and sausage popular
As for the feast, raclette and sausage variations top the list of popularity. Almost 40 percent have the same every year. Cookies are more than 60 percent part of the Christmas season. When it comes to sausage, or rather Würschtl, Austrians prefer tarragon and Kremser mustard. In addition, 500 tons of carp end up on our plates during the Christmas season (with the holidays). Of course there are regional differences. The Burgenlanders are happy with their goose and the Carinthians with smoked sausages.
“What could be more fun than eating with your loved ones and celebrating Christmas? Right now we have to realize how valuable our food is and that we have to learn to appreciate it again,” says Hannes Royer, biological miner and chairman of Land creates life.
