In the western Afghan city of Herat, women protested Saturday against their ban by the country’s universities. Earlier there were demonstrations in the capital Kabul. The Taliban have massively curtailed women’s rights since taking power in August 2021.
Girls and women are largely excluded from public life. The Taliban immediately banned women from all universities in Afghanistan on Tuesday. Two days later there were demonstrations in the capital Kabul. At least one of the women has since been reported missing. On Saturday, the Taliban still had a strong presence with the army.
Protests dispersed with batons
On that day, women in the western Afghan city of Herat demonstrated against their ban by the country’s universities. They took to the streets in small groups with slogans such as ‘Education is our right’, one demonstrator told the APA news agency. The women gathered behind her in front of the provincial governor’s office. The Taliban allegedly crushed the protests with water cannons and batons. Videos posted on social networks show a fire truck spraying demonstrators with a liquid.
The protest is not without danger: in the past, women who stood up for their rights were repeatedly detained, sometimes for weeks.
