Three Kurds shot dead – Paris: shooter is in psychiatry

Date:

After the deadly attack in Paris, the alleged perpetrator was admitted to a psychiatric ward. A doctor determined that the man’s state of health was not compatible with a stay in police custody. As the Paris prosecutor’s office announced on Saturday evening, the suspect must be brought before an investigating judge as soon as his condition allows. Riots broke out in Paris on Saturday.

On Friday, a man fired several shots at a Kurdish community center, a restaurant and a hair salon, killing three people. Three other people were injured in the attack in the tenth arrondissement of Paris. According to the Kurdish umbrella organization Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDK-F), all victims are Kurdish activists. The alleged perpetrator, a 69-year-old Frenchman, has been arrested.

Prosecutors opened investigations into willful homicide and serious violence; also because of a racist motive. “He clearly wanted to attack foreigners,” said Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. However, it is unclear whether the attack was explicitly directed against Kurds. The motive is unknown, the suspect was not known to the security services as a right-wing extremist. Media reported that the man told police that he fired the shots because he was a racist.

There were also clashes between police and demonstrators in Paris on Saturday. After an initially peaceful protest in the center of the French capital, cars were overturned and some set on fire. Garbage cans also burned. Police officers were attacked with projectiles and officers used tear gas. The situation calmed down in the early evening.

As early as Friday afternoon, there were clashes between an angry mob and the police. Protesters threw objects, set garbage cans on fire and erected barricades. The windows of several passenger cars and police cars were also smashed. Police also used tear gas on Friday.

A Kurdish organization had called for a rally on Republic Square on Saturday. Several hundred people gathered on Saturday. Many held up banners demanding that the crime be solved.
