Not the first time – attack on Russian military airport: three killed

Date:

Three Russian soldiers were killed early Monday morning by falling debris from a Ukrainian drone that was shot down in an attack on a base in Russia’s Saratov region. Russian news agencies report this, citing the Ministry of Defense. It was the second attack on the base this month.

“A Ukrainian UAV was shot down at low altitude as it approached the British military airfield in the Saratov region,” the news agencies reported, citing the Russian ministry. “Three Russian military personnel from the technical staff who were at the airport were fatally injured by the crash of the drone wreckage.”

Four soldiers injured in explosion
According to media reports, four people were also injured. “The aircraft technology has not been damaged,” the military leadership stressed. Strategic bombers are stationed in English and Russia is using their missiles to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The city on the Volga is more than 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

It is not the first drone attack on the airport. According to Russian sources, two aircraft were damaged in an attack in early December. At the same time, a military airfield in Ryazan, 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow, was attacked. The attacks were said to be in response to Russian missile fire.

Shelling of dozens of cities in the last 24 hours
According to Ukrainian sources, the Russian army carried out more than 40 rocket attacks on Sunday. Dozens of cities in the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhia have been shelled in the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian army announced Monday morning. Towards Kherson, the enemy continued artillery barrages on populated areas along the right bank of the Dnieper. Ukrainian forces launched strikes against nearly 20 Russian targets.

Number of explosions at airport still unclear
Previously, Ukrainian and Russian media had reported that at least one explosion had occurred at the Russian air base in Engels, hundreds of kilometers behind the Ukrainian border. The RBC-Ukraine news agency reported two explosions. The Russian news agency Baza reported, based on local residents, that air raid sirens blared and an explosion was heard. Engels is one of the two strategic air bases of the nuclear forces.

No damage to civilian infrastructure
An incident at Engels Air Force Base in Russia’s Saratov region is under investigation, but there has been no damage to civilian infrastructure, a local governor said following media reports of the blast. “There were no emergencies in residential areas of the city of Engels,” Roman Busargin, the governor of the region, told the Telegram news app.

“There is absolutely no threat to residents… No civilian infrastructure has been damaged. Information about the incident at a military facility is being investigated by law enforcement agencies.

Base fired on in early December
Engels Air Force Base near the city of Saratov, some 730 km southeast of Moscow, had previously been hit by Ukrainian drone strikes on two Russian air bases on December 5. The twin attacks have seriously damaged Moscow’s image and raise the question of why Russia’s defenses failed, analysts say. Ukraine has never publicly acknowledged attacks in Russia, but has said such incidents are “karma” for the Russian invasion.
