The Krone report on the situation in some Viennese hospitals caused quite a stir. Finding staff is difficult.
The staff in the hospitals are at the limit. The situation in the emergency department of the Ottakringkliniek in particular caused dismay. Here patients are ‘stored’ in several rows of beds. Yet hardly any new jobs are being created, the FPÖ complains. For example, there are only three vacancies for qualified nurses at the job fairs of the AKH in the field of urology as a whole.
AKH refutes criticism
“The number is not correct, there are advertisements for 13 nursing posts (full time equivalent) in the field of urology. Of the six applicants who were interested in the university clinic of urology in the past three months, unfortunately not one person has decided to apply in this clinic,” explains Karin Fehringer, spokeswoman for Vienna General Hospital.
“No jobs are even advertised”
“The conditions in the Vienna health system are unbearable. This is also evident from the current research of the Medical Association. It should not be the case that patient care suffers,” says Viennese VP state party chairman Karl Mahrer. And FP chairman Dominik Nepp railed: “In Vienna’s hospitals there is one danger report after another. Jobs are not even advertised for urgently needed personnel.” For example, exactly one place for qualified nurses is offered for the hopelessly overloaded central emergency department.
“We do not automatically place an advertisement for every vacancy on our vacancy page. There are reasons for that. If there are several identical vacancies, as there are in the mentioned department, the clarity for the user suffers if we advertise them all as well,” says the Vienna Health Association.
