First year without bank robberies in Denmark

Date:

There was not a single bank robbery in Denmark in 2022. The background to this is that cash in bank branches is being phased out. The banking union welcomed this development as armed robbery is a “significant burden for the workers involved”.

Those who have not experienced something like this can hardly imagine the emotional consequences. Many of those affected still suffer from insomnia, anxiety or restlessness. In 2000 there were still 221 armed bank robberies in relatively peaceful Denmark, since 2017 there have been less than ten per year. After all, none were registered in 2022, as banking association Finansforbundet announced on Tuesday.

Only twelve percent paid in cash
Cash has been losing importance in the Scandinavian country for years and plays a minor role in everyday life. The corona pandemic has further accelerated this trend. As a result, the country’s banks hardly have any cash reserves in their branches. In March 2022, the central bank announced that cash would account for only 12 percent of payments by 2021. In 2017, that was still 23 percent.

“Stockholm Syndrome”
At the same time, Scandinavia, more specifically the Swedish capital Stockholm, is the scene of one of the most famous bank robberies ever. In August 1973, after a botched bank robbery, a man held four employees of the institute hostage for days. However, after the liberation, no one wanted to testify against the perpetrator – the phenomenon is considered the birth of the term “Stockholm Syndrome”.
