The EU Parliament is far from calm over the corruption scandal. The Belgian judiciary has requested that the immunity of two more MEPs be waived.
They are Marc Tarabella from Belgium and Andrea Cozzolino from Italy, both from the Socialist Group. (They have already been suspended by their parties.)
Funds accepted from Qatar?
The politicians are suspected of accepting bribes from Qatar. Both are accused of receiving “gifts” from imprisoned Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is said to be the lynchpin of the corruption scandal, and Francesco Giorgi, partner of Eva Kaili, former vice president of the European Parliament.
Marc Tarabella was originally considered a big critic of the World Cup in Qatar, but suddenly praised the labor market reforms in the desert state ahead of the start of the World Cup.
Decision scheduled for February 13
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, will announce the motion at the upcoming plenary session on January 16. She asks that the question be dealt with quickly – a decision is scheduled for February 13. Metsola stressed that Parliament supports the investigation and will “continue to ensure that there will be no impunity”.
