the republican Kevin McCarthy He failed to be elected president of the United States House of Representatives on the first ballot held this Tuesday at the start of the 118th Congress due to opposition from several members of his own party.
McCarthy needed 218 votes to be elected “speaker” of the House of Commons and only got 203. He was not elected the first time – which had not happened in a century – so successive votes will have to be held until the candidate has the necessary majority.
Before entering the plenary session, the California congressman had admitted that he did not have enough votes to become the new president of the US House of Representatives, although he assured that he would continue to fight to get them.
The Democratic candidate Hakeem Jeffriesof New York, garnered 212 votes, while the Republicans who rose against McCarthy put forward another candidate, the far-right congressman from Arizona Andy Biggswho received 10 votes.

A total of 9 members of Congress voted for none of them and the vote of Democratic lawmaker Donald McEachin, who died in November, is missing.
Successive ballots must then be held until a candidate achieves a majority. If they fail to do so, the Republicans, who control the majority with 222 of the 435 seats, would be forced to nominate a new candidate.
The last time it took more than one vote to choose the “speaker” was a century ago. in 1923the President of the House was elected in a ninth ballot, while in 1869 it was reached after 60 votes, a process that took two months.
The House cannot resolve any issue until the “Speaker” is appointed, the third authority in the United States after the President, Joe Biden, and the Vice President, Kamala Harris, who also presides over the Senate.
