Russia is likely to use state-of-the-art stealth jets in its offensive war against Ukraine, the British Defense Ministry said, citing its intelligence services. However, the Russian Air Force does not want to lose its state-of-the-art fighter jets and is therefore risk averse in its missions…
The Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets have been in operation since at least June 2022, according to the London Ministry. These are fifth-generation Russian supersonic jets with stealth technologies and state-of-the-art instruments. The fighter jets are codenamed Felon by NATO.
According to British intelligence, Russia will likely limit itself to missions where the jets remain on Russian territory and then launch long-range air-to-surface or air-to-air missiles at targets in Ukraine.
“Risk-Averse Approach”
This is “symptomatic of Russia’s continued risk-averse approach to the use of its air power in war,” according to the British Ministry of Defence. Moscow apparently wants to prevent the stealth jets from being taken out of the sky, which could expose sensitive technology. It would also be accompanied by a loss of image and fewer export opportunities.
The London Ministry also released a satellite image from late December showing five Sukhoi Su-57s parked at Russia’s Akhtubinsk Air Force Base. Since this is the only known base for the stealth jets, these aircraft are likely involved in operations against Ukraine, sources said.
