An invasion of Taiwan would have devastating consequences for China, but would result in heavy casualties for all warring parties. That is the prognosis of the Center for International and Strategic Studies in Washington. The experts have conducted 24 war simulations, in most models Taiwan would remain equally democratic and independent. However, the price to pay would be enormous for all states involved.
China considers the island’s democratic republic to be part of the People’s Republic, while Taiwan has long considered itself independent. The United States sees itself as the protective power of Taiwan. Recently, tensions in the region had increased significantly.
US position ‘damaged for years’
The report said, “The United States and Japan are losing dozens of ships, hundreds of planes and thousands of soldiers. Such losses would damage the US position in the world for years to come.”
Thousands of American soldiers were killed and two aircraft carriers were sunk
China would therefore sink two US aircraft carriers in most simulations performed. In addition, the United States would have to face between ten and twenty warships as a loss. According to the scenarios, 3,200 American soldiers could be killed in just three weeks.
Taiwan is also seriously weakened
It goes on to say that while Taiwan’s forces will not be completely defeated, they will be severely weakened. They should be defending an island where basic services have collapsed.
China’s biggest losses
For China, however, an invasion would lead to much greater losses. Not only would the attack fail: according to the simulation, some 10,000 soldiers could die and tens of thousands would end up in captivity, according to the report presented earlier this week. In addition, the People’s Liberation Army was estimated to lose 155 aircraft and 138 warships. The country’s navy is said to be “in ruins”.
