Several reasons – Catholic Church: record number of layoffs

Date:

The number of people leaving the Catholic Church rose to a record high last year. According to church statistics published on Wednesday, 90,808 people will leave the Catholic Church in 2022. This means more people left the church last year than in 2010 with 85,960.

There does not seem to be a single decisive reason for the many layoffs. The number of Catholics shrank from 4.83 million in the previous year to 4.73 million (1.96 percent). “For many people, a distance from the church, which has increased in recent years due to the pandemic, will probably be the decisive factor for the currently high number of people leaving,” Kathpress analyzed the current development.

The economic situation is important
According to information from the dioceses, this trend was reinforced last year by the tense general economic situation. This despite the fact that due to the corona pandemic, the dioceses had received people when collecting the church contribution. In recent years, anger has also arisen among some members about the church’s corona measures, which were no stricter than in other areas.

The number of people who left the church was already relatively high last year at 72,222 and was the second highest after 2010, when many people turned their backs on the church after cases of abuse became known.
