In desperation, mom and dad had to watch as little Alyssa’s 13-year-old daughter struggled to survive. Because the girl had been diagnosed with leukemia months ago. Chemotherapy and bone marrow donations were ineffective – the blood cancer kept returning to the child’s delicate body.
But then God apparently sent her guardian angels to earth, namely the best doctors and nurses of the world famous “Great Ormond Street” Children’s Hospital in London.
Genetically modified cells
It may seem like a medical miracle to the layman, but behind the cure (after only 28 days!) is scientific work using genetically modified cells that “hunt” and destroy insidious cancer cells. It is based on sensationally new and very special molecular biological techniques for the targeted modification of DNA.
“The so-called CAR-T cells are a new type of medication that can be used to fight some forms of blood cancer in children and adults using their own immune system,” says Matthias Preusser, head of the clinical department for oncology in general hospital in Vienna.
Good news for patients in Austria:
The method is also available in hospitals here and is constantly being developed to make it accessible to the sick. Preusser’s tentative diagnosis: “The girl’s successful treatment shows that modern laboratory methods can also be used to treat CAR-T cells for special cancers for which they were previously unsuitable. This form of therapy will become increasingly important in treatment.”
