A wood chip stove caught fire at night and woke the mother from her sleep. While the father investigated and removed the cause, the mother wanted to get the children to safety. But it was too late: the enormous smoke blocked the escape route and the mother locked herself in the bedroom with the children.
A mother (35) from Röschitz in the Horn district was awakened in the middle of her sleep around 4:30 am: she noticed a strong smell of burning. But what the family did not know at the time: the wood chip heating in the agricultural yard had been on since 3:30 am. The woman woke up her husband (39), who located the fire there.
Smoke prevented rescue
The mother woke up the children who were also sleeping on the upper floor and wanted to bring them to safety. However, she had counted without the raging fire: because the smoke had become so thick that she was no longer on the ground floor and therefore unable to go outside. So she fled into the bedroom with her offspring and closed the door firmly.
Fire brigade was not called
Meanwhile, the man put an end to the flames and saved his family. The fire was started by a backfire from the auger to the hopper. The damage amounts to around 100,000 euros. The fire department was not called.
